Lawrence Steigrad Fine Arts - New York - USA

.
Lawrence Steigrad Fine Arts deals in Old Master and British paintings, drawings, and sculpture primarily dating from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, with a particular emphasis on portraiture. We are located on the upper east side in a nineteenth century townhouse. We are one block away from The Frick Collection. In the United States, we are the only gallery to continually feature portraiture of this period. It is a field of collecting in which wonderful works can still be obtained at a reasonable expense. Having produced shows and catalogs devoted to portraiture since 1989, we have been gratified by the results. Many important paintings have been placed in American and European private collections, as well as numerous works borrowed for exhibitions and sold to the permanent collections of national and international museums.

Galerie St. Etienne - New York - USA

.
The Galerie St. Etienne is the oldest gallery in the United States specializing in Expressionism and Self-Taught Art. Its predecessor, the Neue Galerie, was founded in Vienna in 1923 by the late Otto Kallir and was a principal exponent of German and Austrian modernism during the period between the two world wars. Having opened with the first posthumous Egon Schiele retrospective, the Neue Galerie was also the exclusive Austrian representative of such major artists as Alfred Kubin and Oskar Kokoschka. In 1930, Kallir rescued from oblivion the legacy of Richard Gerstl, today ranked with Schiele and Kokoschka as one of Austria's major Expressionists. Also in 1930, Kallir published the first catalogue raisonné of Schiele's paintings. Kallir functioned as a publisher of limited edition prints, working with such artists as Max Beckmann, Johannes Itten, Oskar Kokoschka and Alfred Kubin--all of whom he knew well. In addition, Kallir, like many early pioneers of modernism, was extremely interested in the work of untrained artists. He would greatly expand upon this interest after the 1938 Nazi invasion forced him to flee Austria.

After emigrating to the United States in 1939, Kallir established New York's Galerie St. Etienne and helped to introduce Expressionism to this country. Numerous important Austrian and German modernists, including Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Egon Schiele, were given their first American exhibitions at our gallery in the 1940s and '50s. We were instrumental in arranging the first American museum acquisitions of works by these artists (by such institutions as the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art).

Looking for art that reflected his enthusiasm for his newly adopted homeland, Otto Kallir became interested in American folk art. In 1940, the Galerie St. Etienne gave Anna Mary Robertson ("Grandma") Moses her first one-woman exhibition. We went on to become her exclusive representative, and Moses became one of the most famous and popular American artists of the immediate postwar era. More recently, the Galerie St. Etienne has expanded its interest in self-taught art to include Art Brut and "Outsider" material. In addition to the estate of Grandma Moses, we have worked with the estates of Henry Darger and John Kane; we also represent Ilija Bosilj, Michel Nedjar, and the Artists of Gugging.

Since Otto Kallir's death in 1978, the Galerie St. Etienne has been run by his long-time business partner, Hildegard Bachert, and his granddaughter, Jane Kallir.

The Galerie St. Etienne's commitment to its areas of expertise are demonstrated by the breadth and depth of our activities:
• We mounted the first American exhibitions of many of "our" artists
• We have curated or co-curated exhibitions for major museums all over the world
• We regularly mount museum-scale loan exhibitions on our premises and have borrowed from majorinstitutions and private collectors all over the world
• We have produced numerous scholarly publications, including the catalogues

Spanierman Gallery - New York - USA

.
Some time ago, there was quite a wonderful little shop called Old World Antiques on 57th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. It was presided over by my great uncle Fred Spanierman, who left Vienna in 1902. Nearby was the old Savoy Art and Auction Gallery. Founded in 1928 and presided over by my father, Samuel Spanierman, it was located at 5 East 59th Street and later moved to 50th Street across from Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.

And now, I, myself, preside over Spanierman Gallery, LLC, located at 45 East 58th Street, right between those old memories.

For more than a half century, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, has been dedicated to dealing in the finest American artwork of the nineteenth century to the present. In September of 1994, the gallery moved from 50 East 78th Street (its home for almost thirty years), to a luxurious new location at 45 East 58th Street, directly across the street from the Four Seasons Hotel. With 12,000 square feet of space, the gallery presents exhibitions of the highest quality, including loans from museums and private collections and works from our own holdings.

In 2006 Spanierman Modern opened next door to our existing gallery. Its shows have featured modern and contemporary artists from the mid twentieth century to the present.

Soufer Gallery - New York - USA

.
Soufer Gallery was established in November of 1977 when it opened its doors at the present location. Under the direction of Mrs. Mahboubeh Soufer, the gallery’s focus was primarily on French contemporary artists. During the 1980’s the gallery’s emphasis shifted to French Post-Impressionists. For over twenty years this has been a central focus of the gallery, specializing in the works of Raoul Dufy, Maurice Utrillo, Andre Lhote and their contemporaries.

Rozita Shay joined Soufer Gallery in 1987 while pursuing her studies, and has been pivotal in helping Mahboubeh Soufer define her collection. She has been the Director at Soufer Gallery for the past fifteen years.

Subsequently, the focus shifted to include German Expressionists, specifically concentrating on the work of George Grosz. Among the many memorable exhibitions, were extensive and comprehensive shows of Max Beckmann’s etchings and Ernst Barlach’s sculptures.

Soufer Gallery usually displays works from its extensive inventory holdings, and on occasion does hold special exhibitions.

Sloan Fine Art - New York - USA

.
Alix Sloan was the director of the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, from 1991 through 1995. During that time, she worked with several contemporary artists who have gone on to achieve critical and financial success. From 1996 through 2001, she worked in film production, managing multi-million dollar budgets and began a freelance career as an art, marketing and advertising writer. In 2001 she returned to fine art full time as a private dealer, consultant and curator. After spending most of her life in Los Angeles, Sloan returned to New York in 2005 and opened Sloan Fine Art at the corner of Rivington and Norfolk Streets on the Lower East Side in January 2008. The gallery exhibits works in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography and works on paper. Currently represented artists include Mia Brownell, Nicole Etienne, Elizabeth McGrath, Marion Peck and Aaron Smith.

Sloan's passion for problem solving and tackling new challenges led her to found Sloan Fine Art Projects in January 2011. SFA Projects allows Sloan, her employees, artists and extensive network of contacts in a wide range of fields to participate in creative projects beyond the traditional scope of a gallery. Projects include planning and executing arts related events, pop up exhibitions, curatorial projects and consulting for artists, collectors and businesses. Visit the Sloan Fine Art Projects web site for more information and to learn about current and upcoming projects.

In November 2011, Sloan closed the gallery's Rivington Street location. Sloan Fine Art will reopen with a new exhibition space (location to be announced) in late 2012 or early 2013. In the meanwhile, works are available by several artists and can be viewed via jpeg or by appointment at a conveniently located office space in Manhattan. The 2012 calendar year will include art fairs, pop up exhibitions and many Sloan Fine Art Projects.

Slag Gallery - New York - USA

.
Slag Gallery, since its opening in summer 2008, has focused on presenting contemporary works by Eastern European artists who have minimal exposure in the United States. In 2009 the gallery has begun featuring works by international artists in all media. Slag's founder is the Romanian born, Irina Protopopescu who has long been a supporter of artists. Slag Gallery shows works in all media and functions as a laboratory where artists can experiment within the walls of a gallery space. By calling the gallery Slag (Slag is a waste product in metal smelting, yet highly recyclable), Protopopescu is emphasizing that what might be worthless in one context has meaning in another and operates on that model...where one thing can evolve into another. The gallery pushes boundaries by presenting artists whose work explores geo-political, as well as social environments and issues.

Skoto Gallery - New York - USA

.
Skoto Gallery was established in 1992 as a space where some of the best works by African artists can be exhibited within the context of a diverse audience. it's inaugural exhibition was curated by African-American jazz luminary Ornette Coleman. As one of the first galleries specializing in contemporary African Art in New York City, it has been instrumental in the progression of this rapidly growing field.

Inspite of its major commitment to contemporary African Art, the gallery has also managed to expand, deepen and diversify its involvement with contemporary issues by engaging a wide range of art and artists in its programming. Skarstedt Gallery - New York - USA

.
Skarstedt Gallery was founded in 1994 by Per Skarstedt to mount historical exhibitions of the Contemporary American and European artists that had become the core of his specialty as a private dealer and gallerist in Stockholm, Sweden and New York City in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

The philosophical approach of the gallery is based on the long-term nature of our client relationships. For the past twenty years, before the inception of the gallery, Mr. Skarstedt has been advising important collections worldwide. This has cultivated the necessary relationships with the collectors and artists in order to have significant influence on the secondary market.

Since the onset of the gallery, the artwork shown at Skarstedt Gallery has been a constant dialogue and criticism of popular culture of the late Twentieth Century. Though the work is diverse in its presentation and representation, there is a constant exploration of identity, originality, authorship, and media all of which make up the essence of postmodern thought and critical theory of our times.
